QUESTIONS:

1. What are the communication barriers that the 2 persons experienced?

The communication barriers present in their conversation are psychological-her being insecure about what other people say, linguistic-her boyfriend is not good in Filipino and her English is very limited, internal noises-her own thoughts and feelings about their relationship.

2. Why does breakdown of communication occur?

Both of them experienced the various type barriers that can cause the breakdown of communication.

3. What is AFAM? What is Jacky Lou? What is Gold Digger?

AFAM is an acronym for A Foreigner Assigned to Manila. In the Filipino context it is a boyfriend that is rich and from another country, most likely America. Jacky Lou is Jackpot ako, Luge Ka. It means that one in the relationship is lucky and the other one is being used. Gold Digger is someone in a relationship that cares more about the money rather than love in a relationship.

4. What are the issues of the girl? Enumerate and explain.

The girl is not fluent in English and his boyfriend is not good in Filipino. She is tired and stressed for translating everytime. It is hard for her to communicate because of the language barrier. Some people, when they hear them talk calls them stupid. She also has issues with regards to other people's opinion about their relationship. An example is when they were in ukay-ukay, the 2 woman/saleslady are judging and laughing at their relationship saying that is it impossible for a guy like his boyfriend to fall inlove with a girl like her. She was also called "jacky lou, exotic and gold digger" and other bad Filipino streotypes. She is not happy anymore because of all the judgements of her own countrymen.

5. Can their situation be resolved/improved? If yes, why and how? If no explain why.

Yes. They just need more time and try a little bit harder for their communication to work because as stated in the video, they really love each other. The barriers affecting them is just a challenge as a couple that they need to overcome. The girl should also disregard what other people are saying because in the first place, it is not the audience that is in a relationship. He loves her and that is what is important. Both of them is also trying hard to learn each other's language.
