Discussion question 3
In your own
words, differentiate LOCUTIONARY, ILLOCUTIONARY, PERLOCUTIONARY and give at least
1 example for each (not copied from the handout).
A Locutionary
Act is an utterance or the act of actually saying something in the form of
sounds, words, phrases and statement. The utterance must be sensible and shares
the same meaning towards the people who are communicating. An example would be “Woah!”
and “Please
come in”. Illocutionary act is
an act in saying something specific. It has several intentions of the sender.
Illocutionary act can be in a form of giving out opinions, persuading, confirmations/denials,
order, promise, advices and predictions. An example would be “Blackpink
was robbed of awards this year.” or “I will help you finish the requirement
before the due date.”. Lastly is Perlocutionary
act. Perlocutionary act seeks to change behavior. It has the purpose of
changing your thoughts, feelings and actions. It can come in a form on insult, persuasion,
something inspiring or something convincing. “Just keep in fighting, we can win
this!” is an example of it.
